A Lion Air flight JT 610 carrying 189 people crashed into the sea minutes after taking off from Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta to the city of Pangkal Pinang. Minutes after takeoff, with the skies clear, the crew of Lion Air Flight 610 contacted air traffic controllers and asked permission to return to the airport.
Officials say it is unlikely that anybody survived. The cause of the crash is unknown.
Rescuers have released footage of debris and personal items floating in the water at the crash site, including handbags, clothing, mobile phones, ID cards and driving licences.
The plane departed Jakarta, the capital, at 6:21 a.m. Monday. The aviation website Flight Tracker said the flight had been scheduled to arrive at 7:20 a.m. in Pangkal Pinang.
